10 tips to go from mediocre email to sensational digest

This week as promised we want to let you in on 5 more tips that will help you make your newsletter exceptional. If you missed last week’s post, no worries! You can find it here. In total, those are 10 ideas that could transform your newsletter and get subscribers to love your digest! So let’s take a look! Next on our list is:

6. EXPRESS YOURSELF
Being more personal in your newsletter is a way to engage with readers on a deeper level. Writing only a “Hi, this is my weekly digest” or even skipping the intro is so not going to cut it. Given the fact that humans are emotional creatures, sharing personal experiences and stories will get readers to easily relate to you and forget about the fact that this email blast reaches many others. Newsletters can be very generic and impersonal sometimes, so you can take advantage of this fact and stand out. If you are a blogger especially, you can really let your personality shine through. Don’t get stuck on the idea of what people will think if you get a bit too opinionated or informal in your newsletter. If you have a good sense of humor, don’t be shy; let others see it in your writing. It will be appreciated, who doesn’t want to laugh?! All in all, just be yourself. The personal touch goes a long way, I guarantee it.

7. The See-Through Approach
A winning strategy is to always be open, transparent and direct. Try not to sound like a salesperson who’s trying to shove something down your reader’s throats. Put in effort to get your message across and appeal to your audience. Tell them what you are asking of them or offering and what you can give back in return.

8. Ask, Listen, Learn
If you’re stuck and you can’t figure out how to make your newsletter valuable or interesting, a smart thing to do is to research a bit. Think about a newsletter you like. Ask your friends, colleagues, clients (preferably people in the same field) which newsletters they read and why. What makes those newsletters appealing to them? Go a step further and ask your followers/clients what they want to see in your newsletter. That is a sure way you won’t get it wrong! And then listen. Listen carefully. Afterwards, just collect all the information and try to see a pattern among everyone you talked to. That’s a great first step to building your awesome newsletter!

9. The Devil’s In The Detail
Another thing to keep in mind when putting together your email digest is to pay attention to detail. You can mention in the beginning of your newsletter all the nitty-gritty details about how often you’ll be posting, what your newsletter will contain. You can be very creative with this since not a lot of people do it. It informs your reader about such details and gives them the opportunity to decide whether or not this newsletter fits them. Also, don’t forget to add a very obvious unsubscribe button somewhere! Be straightforward from the beginning and throughout. We talked about respecting your readers and not wasting their time, right?

10. The Cherry On Top
So far, we’ve covered some nifty tips on how to create an outstanding newsletter. But none of that matters if your audience doesn’t even get around to opening your email first. Here comes the crucial moment. You really have to spend some time deciding your subject title.

Think of it this way: The subject is like a pickup line-you only get one shot to grab someone’s attention!

A lot of people tend to just write something that always ends up sounding as if they’re selling something yet again. You should avoid that as much as possible. You don’t want people to think your email is spam! Make it cheeky, funny or straight to the point. Doesn’t matter what the tone is, as long as it corresponds with your newsletter and grabs people’s attention. Goal is to get them to open. What do you think will make their fingers itch to click on your email once they see your subject line? Play on their curiosity!

And voila! Those were 10 tips that can make your newsletter stand out! What do you think makes your newsletter special? What strategies do you use to grow your subscribers list? What makes some of the most awesome newsletters you’ve read unique? We’d love to hear back from you below in the comments! ❤
